TURKEY IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT TRIESTESPRESSO EXPO: A COUNTRY OF GREAT OPPORTUNITIES

The coffee world in the relations between Italy and Turkey, B2B meetings, workshops on various topics related to the supply chain, and the Capo in B Championship are some of the highlights of the second day of Triestespresso Expo, the only global fair dedicated to espresso, now in its eleventh edition, taking place until October 26 at the Generali Convention Center in the Porto Vecchio, now Porto Vivo, in Trieste. The event is organized by the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce through its in-house company Aries Scarl, in collaboration with the Trieste Coffee Association and with the co-organization and support of the Municipality of Trieste.

The day began with the conference “Opportunities from Around the World: The Coffee Market in Turkey.” Antonio Paoletti, president of the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce, recalled the “historic link between Trieste and Turkey, particularly Istanbul, which concerns entrepreneurs and the business world as well as other sectors, such as culture. We chose Turkey this year as the guest country at Triestespresso Expo because it is a large nation and a future consumer of espresso coffee.” Enrico Samer, Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Turkey for Northeastern Italy, emphasized that “Trieste has been a gateway for Turkey for over 30 years, with more than half of the goods passing through the port coming from or heading to Turkey, and there are excellent opportunities looking to the future.” Kadir Eser, Commercial Attaché at the Turkish Consulate General, explained that “Turkey, with its 85 million inhabitants and a young population, continues to grow. Turks love coffee in general and especially Turkish coffee, but lately, particularly among younger generations, other types of coffee are preferred. In this context, Italian espresso fits in. I hope that in the near future, there will be a new role in Turkey-Italy relations specifically in coffee trade.”

Also present at the fair was Fedja Pobegaljo, director of the Slovenian Chamber of Tourism and Hospitality. “We are at Triestespresso Expo for the second time,” he said, “and we have brought a group of hoteliers and tourism operators, given the strong interest in the coffee sector. Here they have the opportunity to see the various representatives of the production supply chain.”

Transition to Compostable Solutions Benefits Consumers: Meeting Organized by the Biorepack Consortium

Organized by the Biorepack consortium, a meeting was held to highlight the advantages of compostable solutions for Italy’s most beloved beverage. The goal was to increase the amount of coffee intercepted in the separate collection of organic waste, make life easier for consumers, and reduce the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfills. Each year, nearly 3 billion coffee capsules are used in Italy, but only 6% are currently made from compostable packaging.

“Beyond how we indulge in our coffee, it is essential that product waste and the packaging used for it are disposed of properly,” stated Carmine Pagnozzi, General Director of Biorepack. “Otherwise, millions of kilograms of coffee risk ending up in general waste instead of being collected with organic waste. This prevents sending large quantities of organic waste to treatment facilities to be transformed into valuable compost, which can restore organic matter and fertility to our agricultural soils. It is therefore important to support the circular efforts of companies in the sector.”

Workshops, Meetings, and Competitions

Deepening the EUDR Topic

In this second day of Triestespresso Expo, several workshops were conducted by Andrej Godina, a global coffee expert. Informative sessions were also curated by illycaffè, while La San Marco showcased a demonstration of latte art techniques to create imaginative designs in coffee.

During the workshop “Road to EUDR: From Regulation to Compliance with the New European Deforestation Regulation,” organized by Area Science Park in collaboration with the Italian Coffee Roasters Group, the Trieste Coffee Association, and the Enterprise Europe Network, coffee industry operators addressed the theme of complying with EUDR requirements. This regulation requires those placing goods and products on the EU market or exporting them, as well as traders distributing or transforming these products, to ensure their supply chains are free from deforestation and legally compliant. Small and micro-enterprises have until June 30, 2025, to meet these requirements. This regulation aims to transform the operations of commercial organizations, pushing them toward sustainable practices by prohibiting the entry of products into the EU market unless they meet deforestation-free criteria. Focusing on key raw materials with significant environmental impacts, the EUDR represents a comprehensive effort to reduce deforestation globally, promoting responsible sourcing and legal compliance in the international market.

Today also marked the first day dedicated to B2B meetings among companies in the sector, with matchmaking activities aimed at creating partnerships, synergies, and new collaborations.

Finally, the popular Capo in B Championship took place, a competition among the city’s baristas for the best “capo in bicchiere” made on the spot. Eight challengers participated, and the winner was Ebe Sai Crescente from the ‘Home – Sapore di Casa’ café. The competition was supported by the main sponsor La San Marco and technical sponsors Latterie Friulane, PulyCaff, and Torrefazione Goriziana.

TRIESTESPRESSO EXPO 2024 KICKS OFF

This morning marked the opening of the eleventh edition of Triestespresso Expo, the only global fair dedicated to espresso, taking place until October 26 at the Generali Convention Center in the Porto Vecchio – Porto Vivo of Trieste. This biennial event spans three days, where the international coffee community engages in discussions about innovations and future prospects. With 48 countries represented, this year’s expo further solidifies its role as a reference point for the industry. Organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Giulia through its in-house company Aries Scarl, it is held in collaboration with the Trieste Coffee Association and co-organized with the support of the Municipality of Trieste.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Francesco Lollobrigida, sent a message for the opening, noting that “international events like Triestespresso Expo are essential for building commercial relationships and discussing changes affecting the sector, from raw materials to the experimentation of new techniques and innovative solutions, especially in light of the challenges the entire agri-food sector is facing. Coffee, for us, is not just a product: it is a symbol that unites Italy from North to South, telling the story of our regions, communities, and culture.”

Antonio Paoletti, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Giulia, explained that “Triestespresso Expo is a bet of the Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Giulia and coffee entrepreneurs who present an event rich in opportunities and novelties. International participation is confirmed as one of the strengths of the event. Among the countries represented are South Korea, India, Uganda, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Latvia, China, Rwanda, Serbia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Romania, Germany, Austria, Croatia, and many others. Moreover, for the first time, we have brought buyers from various countries for B2B meetings with exhibitors, adding significant value. This will be an innovative, important edition with a significant economic impact for the city.”

Pierpaolo Roberti, regional assessor for Security in Friuli Venezia Giulia, emphasized that “Triestespresso Expo is a crucial event for Trieste and Friuli Venezia Giulia. This city has been inhaling the aroma of coffee for centuries thanks to its renowned historic cafés, the many industries in the sector, and the buildings in the city center, which, like the headquarters of the Region, have hosted notable shipping companies that were protagonists of the extraordinary economic and trading development of the regional capital.” Mayor Roberto Dipiazza highlighted that “the city is on the move; international events like this contribute to giving even more visibility to Trieste.”

For Arianna Mingardi, president of the Trieste Coffee Association, the fair “represents an exceptional opportunity for dialogue, meeting, and comparison,” while Omar Zidarich, president of the Italian Coffee Roasters Association, added that “the expo is now not just an exhibition but also an event focused on training and exploring various themes, which is certainly an important achievement.” Zidarich also shared a significant national statistic indicating the importance of coffee in the country: “In Italy, 95 million cups of espresso are consumed every day.”

The inaugural day began with a conference on the regulatory theme of the European Deforestation-free Products Regulation (EUDR), the EU regulation against deforestation that may soon come into effect. Among the speakers providing a detailed focus on the topic was Massimiliano Fabian, vice president of the European Coffee Federation (ECF). “The implementation of the deforestation regulation is certainly a shared goal across the entire coffee sector – he emphasized – but it is complicated in its modalities and timing, even from the competent authorities. There has even been a proposal to postpone it by 12 months, which is likely to go through. The significant challenges we face are practical: tracing such a complex and long supply chain as coffee is not easy. It is not a simple challenge – he continued – and involves all producing countries, where the raw material is very important for the livelihoods of many people. If the regulation is not implemented correctly, it risks causing significant problems for these people, both socially and economically.”

The first day continued with two workshops: “Presentation of the new C.V.A. sensory evaluation methodology by Alberto Polojac – National Coordinator S.C.A. Italy” and “Sensory and tasting journey divided into three days: Flavours in a cup + glass” led by Edy Bieker, an expert taster in the coffee world, and Arianna Mingardi, Administrator of Amigos Caffè and President of the Trieste Coffee Association. The day also featured the performance “IBRIK, Turkish coffee extraction” by Moritz Hofer, S.C.A. trainer and finalist in the national IBRIK 2024 competitions. In collaboration with illycaffè, a session on Training Pills took place: “The importance of creating new recipes,” an interview with Elisa Caria, Senior Training Specialist at the University of Coffee at illycaffè, discussing the significance of developing new coffee recipes to revitalize dialogue with consumers. Another Training Pills session, also with illycaffè, focused on “Winning recipes for business,” an interview with Elisa Caria about the impact of special preparations on average receipts.

The first day concluded with a cupping session featuring eight coffees from Rwandan plantations, led by expert Andrej Godina. This event is part of the ICU RUANDA AID 012590/04/9 collaboration project between the Trieste Coffee Association and the ICU – Institute for University Cooperation to promote coffee produced in the African state, targeting roasters and importers.

The coffee world will gather in Trieste from October 24 to 26 at the Generali Convention Center in the Old Port for Triestespresso Expo 2024, the only global fair dedicated to espresso, with confirmed visitors from 48 countries.

Now in its eleventh edition, the event returns after a two-year hiatus, following its biennial tradition, showcasing the commitment of the Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Giulia and coffee entrepreneurs, offering an event rich in opportunities and novelties.

The event at the Generali Convention Center is organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Giulia through its in-house company Aries Scarl, in collaboration with the Caffè Trieste Association and co-organized with the support of the Municipality of Trieste. International participation is a strong point, with confirmed visitors from South Korea, India, Uganda, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Latvia, China, Rwanda, Serbia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Romania, Germany, Austria, Croatia, and many others.

The event was presented today at the Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Giulia in Trieste. President Antonio Paoletti explained, “This year we selected exhibitors, ensuring everyone has a larger space. Visitors will come from all over the world for an even more important fair in 2024, especially considering the historical moment and the regulation against deforestation, to which we will dedicate a debate to provide fresh updates to all producers, exhibitors, and interested parties. Additionally, for the first time, we have brought buyers from various countries for B2B meetings with exhibitors, which adds significant value. Therefore, it will be an innovative, important edition with a substantial impact on the city.”

Mayor Roberto Dipiazza emphasized, “It is an extraordinary moment for the city; Trieste is full of valuable and successful initiatives. Triestespresso Expo is one of these, an event of excellence for Trieste and the region.” Regional Councilor for Heritage Sebastiano Callari also noted, “Trieste is experiencing an extraordinary renaissance, as seen in the numerous events taking place. This sector event, in particular, is part of the city’s DNA, and it is important because Trieste was historically linked to coffee trade and the free port. It is undoubtedly an extraordinarily important event. A big thank you goes to President Paoletti and the entire Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Giulia for their efforts over the past years.”

Arianna Mingardi, president of the Caffè Trieste Association, expressed her honor in being part of this new edition of Triestespresso Expo, highlighting the importance of the congress that will open the event. “A topic currently at the forefront in the coffee world is the famous regulation against deforestation. We need to be prepared for its potential enforcement, as it will incur significant costs for companies in the supply chain, and everyone will need to adapt. We are ready to discuss this in the conference and explain what this regulation is and what is happening at the European level.”

“We have organized technical sessions within Triestespresso Expo,” said Omar Zidarich, president of the Italian Coffee Roasters Group, “because the trade fair system is changing; they have also become important opportunities for information sharing. For the workshops, we have specifically chosen to maintain high quality in the various round tables that will be held, which will surely spark curiosity and are already generating significant interest. The event is at a historically crucial moment, with great attention to many topics we will address.”

Alberto Polojac from the Trieste Coffee Festival noted, “The festival we organize complements the Triestespresso Expo, aiming to enhance Trieste’s coffee offering and strengthen the city’s connection to the sector. It also aims to give dignity to a supply chain and a beverage that is sometimes undervalued in its importance. Our event, now in its tenth edition, will particularly focus on digital this year.”

Federica Suban, president of FIPE Trieste, highlighted that “local establishments are very happy to be involved; coffee-themed dishes will be offered, featured not only in desserts but also in savory recipes, in both bars and restaurants. We are pleased to be part of this experience and to showcase our tradition, with coffee also at the table in our preparations.”

For Guerrino Lanci, president of Federalberghi Trieste, “Thanks to events like Triestespresso Expo, the city continues its positive trend even after Barcolana, with hotels fully booked. The entire tourism fabric of the city is working hard, with significant growth that positively impacts the territory. Events like this bring visibility, quality, and high-level economic resources to Trieste.”

Patrizia Andolfatto, operational director of Aries, explained that “there will be many significant appointments within the fair. Just to name a few, I think of the workshops and in-depth sessions curated by illycaffè. We will also have competitions, such as the moka contest and the Capo in B Championship, in collaboration with the Trieste Coffee Festival. The latter competition, which pits baristas against each other, is always highly appreciated and followed in the city.”

According to Pierluigi Medeot, general secretary of the chamber and director general of the in-house company Aries, “the fair is the result of collaboration within the ‘Trieste system’ between the Municipality, Region, and Generali Convention Center, along with all active players in the coffee world. It encompasses various fields: commercial, economic, tourism, and cultural. The latter aspect is even more emphasized in 2024, highlighting its winning potential.”

Triestespresso Expo 2024 will be an edition that brings the high quality of Italian espresso to the world at the Generali Convention Center, with significant exhibitors and thousands of buyers and professionals from dozens of countries. This year’s edition will complete all available halls, selecting exhibitors with stands of various sizes and qualities to distinguish this espresso expo from previous editions and other coffee-related events in Italy and worldwide.

Alongside the high-level exhibition, there will also be informative and educational activities focused on current issues and quality. It will kick off with a conference dedicated to the regulatory theme of the European Deforestation-free Products Regulation (EUDR), the European Union regulation against deforestation: time is running out for this historic change, but the challenges are numerous.

Unlike previous editions, this year’s guest country is not a coffee-producing nation but one with high consumption; Turkey has been selected as the guest country. Historically, Turkey has been a significant coffee-consuming market with an extensive commercial network connecting it to the “stan” countries: Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as historic logistical connections with Trieste and its port. Turkey has already received UNESCO recognition for its coffee prepared with the Ibrik, a small pot with a long handle specifically designed for making the so-called “Turkish coffee.”

This year, a new commercial initiative will be the organization of B2B business sessions and workshops with representatives from the countries of origin, involving the Enterprise Europe Network to facilitate open B2B matching during the fair for both exhibitors and visitors, as well as other stakeholders.

COFFEE AND CURRENT EVENTS

The expo takes place at a historically significant time for the sector. With the introduction of the EUDR, which may be postponed until the beginning of 2025 with a decision to be made by December, and rising raw material costs, the fair positions itself as a crucial moment for dialogue and discussion involving all actors in the supply chain, particularly roasters, to reflect on and study new possible commercial strategies and pricing.

This in-depth analysis is particularly relevant in Trieste, where the international nature of the fair will allow for a comparison of different realities and worlds, taking a concrete approach to all issues affecting the coffee sector.

CONVENTIONS AND INSIGHTS

“EUDR: Are we really ready for the entry of the new European Regulation?” on Thursday, October 24, Illy Hall 27 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., is the title of the inaugural conference, dedicated to clarifications on the European Regulation for Deforestation-Free Coffee, an opportunity to explore future implications and set up functional strategies for the sector.
Another important event will be the workshop “Opportunities from the World: The Coffee Market in Turkey – Current Situation and Development,” where the protagonist will be Turkey and coffee consumption within the country, Friday, Oct. 25, Illy Hall 27 10:30 a.m. – 12.00 pm.
Rounding out the in-depth discussions will be the return of workshops, such as those created specifically for the fair by Illycaffè, and a panel discussion, which will take up the theme of EUDR.
On Saturday, October 26, the World Latte Art Grading Battle Championship will take place in the Workshops & Events hall 27 area, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., while the “Capo in B Campionship” and the “Moka contest” will be organized in cooperation with the Trieste Coffee Festival.
The “Capo in B Championship,” the popular and always-followed challenge between baristas in the city that will take place at the Workshop & Competition Area, Friday, Oct. 25, hall 27 from 2 p.m., and is held in collaboration with FIPE of Trieste, and involves the evaluation of coffees by a jury of experts who will analyze the visual aspect, proportions between coffee and foam and taste of four preparations, which must be made in a maximum time of 5 minutes, showing manual skill and artistic spirit.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m., it will be time for the “Moka Contest,” which is open to moka coffee enthusiasts. 10 minutes of time will be available for each participant. Coffee brewing can be either already ground or in beans and ground instantly. The moka (induction) can be brought from home so the as coffee. Those without can use the equipment provided by the organization. Trieste Coffe Festival is organized by Freshmedia srls, in collaboration with the Trieste Coffee Association, Chamber of Commerce Venezia Giulia and Aries Scarl, under the patronage of Confcommercio Trieste, FIPE Trieste and I AM FVG.

TRIESTESPRESSO EXPO 2024: Global Coffee Hub Returns to Trieste

From October 24 to 26, Trieste’s Generali Convention Center will host the Triestespresso Expo 2024, drawing coffee professionals and enthusiasts from 48 countries. The 11th edition of this biennial event promises to be a major platform for discussing trends, challenges, and innovations in the espresso industry.
Organized by the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Trieste Coffee Association, the expo will feature a mix of business-to-business meetings, workshops, and competitions, with a particular focus on the European Union Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR). The regulation, which aims to reduce deforestation linked to supply chains, is set to impact the coffee sector significantly. The opening conference, titled “Are We Really Ready for the New European Regulation?”, will address this pressing issue on October 24 at 11:00 a.m.
New this year is the introduction of B2B business sessions and workshops with representatives from the countries of origin, involving the Enterprise Europe Network to organize during the fair a B2B matching, open to exhibitors, visitors, and other stakeholders.
In an exciting first for the expo, Turkey has been chosen as the guest country for 2024, reflecting its rich coffee culture and longstanding commercial ties to Trieste. A special workshop, “Opportunities from the World: The Coffee Market in Turkey – Current Situation and Development,” will take place on October 25, highlighting Turkey’s role as a significant coffee consumer and its connections to Central Asia.

THE WORLD OF ESPRESSO WILL MEET AGAIN IN TRIESTE

Triestespresso Expo 2024 (TEE2024) is preparing for its eleventh edition, which will be held from 24 to 26 October 2024 at the Generali Convention Center (GCC) in Trieste’s Porto Vecchio.
After the tenth edition in 2022, which marked the return of the event after a four-year forced hiatus due to the pandemic, the event confirms its importance on the international scene.

Now, two years later, the Venice Chamber of Commerce and coffee entrepreneurs are renewing their bet on an appointment that promises opportunities and novelties at a crucial time for the sector.

Participating in Triestespresso Expo 2024 is strategically crucial at a difficult time for the coffee sector, where the margins of coffee roasting companies are seriously threatened, with knock-on effects on all other sectors.
In this challenging context, the fair offers a unique opportunity to connect with the global market and seek new opportunities for growth.

One of the most relevant novelties of this edition is the introduction of a B2B match making activity to expand one’s contacts by organising one’s own appointments, in which all operators in the coffee sector, whether exhibitors or visitors, can participate, thus enabling them to search for, find and meet potential Italian and foreign customers .

This tool made available by Triestespresso Expo, involving the Enterprise Europe Network, is particularly useful for supporting companies in the sector at a time of complexity, helping to strengthen the sector at a time of great challenge and consolidating the role of Triestespresso Expo as a useful marketing tool for all coffee companies.

The exhibition event, organised by the Chamber of Commerce Venezia Giulia through its company Aries Scarl, in collaboration with the Associazione Caffè Trieste and with the support of the Municipality of Trieste, will be attended by visitors from over 20 countries, including South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Latvia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The presence of exhibitors from various European countries confirms the internationality of the event, which remains the only world fair dedicated exclusively to espresso.

‘The Trieste appointment is undoubtedly one of the most important international fairs in the North East,’ comments Antonio Paoletti, President of the Chamber of Commerce Venezia Giulia, ’and an authentic flagship for the coffee sector worldwide.
Despite the difficulties that the sector is facing, we are convinced that Triestespresso Expo will not only be a chance to do business, but also an opportunity to support companies and make their voices heard in relation to the European regulation that will come into force at the end of the year on deforestation and certification of coffee production. The bureaucrats in Brussels cannot afford to bring markets to their knees.’

The Triestespresso Expo 2024 programme will be enriched by a series of highly topical and relevant information and training events.
Among them, a conference dedicated to the European No Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will come into force on 30 December 2024, will explore the repercussions of this legislation on coffee import and export activities. The meeting, organised in cooperation with Assocaffè Trieste, will be attended by experts from the European Coffee Federation (ECF), the European Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty.

This year, Turkey will be the host country, chosen not as a producer but as a major consumer of coffee, with historic trade links with the ‘stan’ countries and strong logistic connections with Trieste and its port.
Turkey, already recognised by UNESCO for its coffee prepared with Ibrik, will also be the protagonist of a dedicated competition, which will be held alongside the WLAG (World Latte Art Grading Battle) world finals and the ‘moka’ and ‘capo in B’ competitions. Also confirmed are the workshops in Italian and English organised by Illy, focused on point-of-sale management to improve economic performance.

Unlike previous editions, the host country has been identified not as a country of production but rather a country where there is high consumption, and for this edition this will be Turkey.

Historically a major coffee consumer market with an important network of trade links with the ‘astan’ countries of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and very important logistic connections with Trieste and its port, it has already obtained Unesco recognition for its coffee prepared with the Ibrik, a small pot with a long handle specifically designed for the preparation of the so-called ‘Turkish style coffee’.

In this edition there will also be a competition dedicated to Ibrik coffee, which will be held alongside the WLAG (World Latte Art Grading Battle) world finals and the competitions dedicated to ‘moka’ and ‘capo in B’. Confirmed the workshops in Italian and English organised by Illy focused on point of sale management aimed at increasing economic performance.

TriestEspresso Expo is confirmed as the world capital of espresso

After 4 years and a pandemic, as many as ten thousand operators from 42 countries

After the 4-year pause enforced by the pandemic, the tenth edition of TriestEspresso Expo went beyond all expectations thanks to the trust that operators placed in the event.

The world has changed since 2018, but the Chamber of Commerce’s bet with coffee entrepreneurs has proved to be a winner. “Businesses and institutions have contributed to the success of this restart,” commented Antonio Paoletti, Chairman of Cciaa Vg, “and I would like to thank the Municipality of Trieste with Mayor Roberto Dipiazza and Councillor Giorgio Rossi, and Federalberghi for supporting us in every action necessary to make the Trieste Convention Center (Tcc) and the heart of Porto Vecchio an international exhibition space.”

The event in the Tcc organized by the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce through its in-house company Aries, with the joint organization and contribution of the Municipality of Trieste, the Convention and Visitor Bureau and in cooperation with the Associazione Caffè Trieste, was attended by 10,000 operators, almost 13,000 in 2018. This result, achieved with the presence of 160 exhibitors and professionals from 42 countries (including Romania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Georgia, Ethiopia, Morocco, Tanzania, Algeria, South Africa, Oman, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, Jordan, Indonesia, South Korea and Brazil), proves that “Trieste, the coffee capital” is not just a registered trademark but an irrefutable reality, despite the numerous events dedicated to coffee that have been concentrated from April until today, after the reopening to the public of fairs without restrictions.

Paoletti concluded, “In addition to the business within the fair, TriestEspresso Expo meant that for several days the hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and the use of transport and services were sold out, which undoubtedly contributed to sales at a time of year when historically there is a big drop in the hospitality and public sector”.

Over the three days of the fair, the rich calendar of events lined up a series of well-attended appointments.

Sustainability was a theme common to all events: it was discussed by Roberto Nocera, CEO of La San Marco, Alessandro Garbin, CEO of Imf roasting machines, and Maurizio Giuli, marketing director of Nuova Simonelli, in the conference entitled “Coffee today, the coffee machine and sustainability”, as well as by Francesca Pellis, lecturer at illycaffè Coffee University, in her speech “The sustainability of coffee: a journey from its origins”.According to illycaffè, “Every person involved in the coffee chain is indispensable in ensuring that the highest levels of quality are achieved. The commitment originates in the producing countries, in the care and pursuit of sustainable practices in the early stages of coffee’s life”.

At the round table organized by Area Science Park, the topic of sustainability was linked to that of the circular economy.

The coffee supply chain is focusing more and more decisively on circularity and zero waste, with the re-use in new industrial cycles of all processing waste, from harvesting to roasting and even decaffeination. One example is the case of Demus, a Trieste-based company that has been a leader in decaffeination, green coffee dewaxing and the production of natural caffeine since 1962, which, thanks to the Enterprise Europe Network – EEN, has found an industrial partner in the UK, Kerax, interested in using the waxes extracted from coffee beans in the textile sector, transforming them from waste to be disposed of into a second raw material.

In the coffee processing chain, another waste for which potential reuses have long been under consideration is coffee silverskin, a silvery film that protects the outside of the green coffee bean. It is partially separated in the field, during drying and removal of the coffee beans from the fruit, and partially during roasting. In order to assess the reuse of this waste, Area Science Park, as part of the initiatives of the EEN network and the ARGO system with the SISSI project, in collaboration with the Associazione Caffè Trieste and the Gruppo Italiano Torrefattori Caffè, organized a round table on Friday 28 October on the utilisation of silverskin. The workshop was part of the 10th edition of TriestEspresso Expo, the international exhibition of Italian espresso that was held from 27 to 29 October in the Trieste Convention Center.

Silverskin is a dry waste that can be easily collected and is generally not reused but disposed of as special waste. However, this material is rich in polyphenols, dietary fibres and xanthines, which make it suitable not only for use in the formulation of supplements and cosmetics as a matrix for fertilising soils, but also for obtaining cellulose, lignin, lipids and some phenolic compounds. These characteristics make it a sustainable material, able to meet the new demands of a market focused on circular economy processes.

“Raw materials under attack – how to resist increases and continue to talk about quality” was the title of the meeting organized by the Trieste Coffee Association, where Adriana Bustamante Romero, manager for sustainability and territory, spoke. She brought the experience of the Inloher company in Honduras where 4,000 families work, and where, she said, “in 20 years we have achieved the goal of being carbon neutral. The Inloher model is very interesting and an example for the coffee culture of Honduras and also Central America. It was a pleasure to come from the birthplace of coffee and bring this experience to TriestEspresso Expo.” The goal of carbon neutrality was achieved thanks to a mix of interventions: “on the one hand,” explained Bustamante Romero, “they worked to reduce emissions, while on the other hand they planted more than 80 hectares of forest, as only plants can compensate for carbon dioxide production”.

The guide “Il Camaleonte” was presented on Friday 28th.

It is called “Il Camaleonte” (The Chameleon) and is the first guide to Italy’s coffee and coffee roasters. It was produced by editors Andrej Godina and Mauro Illiano, who presented it at TriestEspresso Expo. “Il Camaleonte”, which includes more than a hundred Italian businesses, exists both in a printed version, published by Mondadori and available in all bookshops, and in an app version, for both iOS and Android, which can be downloaded from www.guidadeicaffe.com. It is the first work that allows coffee lovers to discover coffee roasters and helps the reader get to know the ideal blend or single-origin among the thousands of references on the market. During the TriestEspresso Expo, the Guide’s editors organised tastings of the award-winning coffees, extracted using the espresso, filter, mocha and single-serving methods. During the tastings, Godina and Illiano provided a review of the sensory profile of each coffee, outlining the special characteristics of each individual reference.To narrate and explain the contents of the guide, the tastings involved the stands of Amigos caffè, Dersut, Demus, Primo Aroma and Bristot.

At the opening of the Trieste Coffee Experts meeting, Franco Bazzara, Chairman of the Bazzara company, stressed that “Trieste Coffee Experts is an important event for the city because it brings together 50 personalities from the Italian and international coffee world. At TriestEspresso Expo we have created a preview of what the event will be like in 2023, an event destined to grow with the support of the institutions and to bring further added values to Trieste.”

The eagerly awaited two-yearly summit brings together the leading figures in the coffee industry and was presented with the opening and institutional greetings by Andrea Bazzara, the company’s sales manager. For the occasion, in collaboration with the roasting company, the Chairman of the Region Massimiliano Fedriga took centre stage and appeared in an exclusive video to give his greetings at the opening of the event organized by Bazzara: “Coffee is not just a quality product, but a ritual that I hope can also be recognized internationally, because it is an enormous value for Italy and the city of Trieste,” he said, “which is why I hope that the institutions can team up to work together, and I thank those who will take part.”

At the summit, the most topical issues affecting the entire world of the coffee chain were addressed. An opportunity for reflection and confrontation that through dialogue allows us to identify the best way to face the challenges of the market and emphasises the need to network, which has always been the focus of the Bazzara family, to unite the forces of the sector, and encourage the exchange of knowledge and experience to increase mutual professionalism. With Trieste Coffee Experts, the Bazzara team is committed to enhancing and promoting the culture of quality espresso: an event that continues to foster synergies among the protagonists of Italian coffee.

Speakers who discussed the state of the art of coffee included Massimiliano Fabian, newly appointed chairman of the ICO, International Coffee Organization, Count Giorgio Caballini di Sassoferrato, chairman of the Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Italian Espresso Coffee, Omar Zidarich, chairman of the Gruppo Italiano Torrefattori Caffè, Fabrizio Polojaz, chairman of the Associazione Caffè Trieste and Luigi Morello, chairman of IEI – Istituto Espresso Italiano.

On the subject of sustainability, Michele Cannone and Edoardo Cucco, respectively Global brand director and brand manager of Lavazza Spa, spoke on “The evolution of the concept of sustainability: the case of La Resierva de İTierra! Cuba”, and Massimo Renda, chairman of Caffè Borbone, continued the discussion with the theme “Recycling and sustainability, clear ideas are needed”. 

Mauro Bazzara, CEO of the roasting company, spoke at the preview focusing on the topic “Coffee: a new business paradigm”. The last speakers were Giuseppe Biffi, who deals with the digital transformation of enterprises for Siemens, with “Digital Factory in the Food Industry – Traceability and Production Efficiency” and Cosimo Libardo, on the board as Strategic Advisor of the World Speciality Coffee Organization and newly elected Treasurer of the International Board of the Specialty Coffee Association, who concluded with the topic “Emotional Turnover: Social Innovation and Economic Sustainability”. These subjects are not only very topical and interesting, but also fully meet the needs of the coffee sector, which is looking optimistically towards a future that always treasures its great history, but with an eye on innovation in a “green” key: objectives that Bazzara has been actively promoting for decades.

As part of the Training pills organized by the illycaffè Coffee University, the Horeca market and its evolution were discussed. “What lies beyond the product is what makes the difference on the market,” recalled Pierpaolo Segrè, lecturer at the Coffee University, “and with Paolo Maritani, a professional in the sector with several outlets in this area, we went to talk about the evolution of the market, the changes and the new way of working and what counts and what makes the difference on the market itself”. These are fundamental elements in the coffee sector, and companies are increasingly focusing on them.

At TriestEspresso Expo, there was room for competition.

Trieste had a home win in the Leva Contest and broke the world record with the pair formed by Alice Cernecca and Ebe Sai Crescente. The previous record was held by the Neapolitan duo formed by Francesco Costanzo and Francesco Arcella with 703 espresso coffees extracted in one hour and was unbeaten since 2019 after their performance in Piazza del Municipio in Naples. The splendid result was surpassed by the two girls from Trieste with a new record of 714 cups extracted in one hour. The competition witnessed outstanding performances by many teams that often came close to the existing record, until it was finally broken at the last minute by the two young winners.

“We did not expect such a result” said Alice Cernecca and Ebe Sai Crescente, “and it was a great satisfaction. We were aiming to beat the other women in the race and maybe a few men, but not the world record. However, we are well trained because we already work with a lever machine with an average of 4 kilos of coffee per day.”

Francesco Costanzo, the previous record holder and organizer of the Leva Contest, is ready to challenge the winners again. “I am delighted, already halfway through the competition we sensed that the challenge had been set in the right way. However, we are ready for next year when we will try to win back the title. To be beaten by two women was still a wonderful thing and I recommend that they enjoy the record because we are ready for the return match.”

Similarly, the Leva Sensory quality extraction competition had impressive results, highlighting the growing passion for the Leva machine extraction technique. The winner was Robert Brinck from Tuscany, who was able to extract three pairs of top-quality espresso coffees. “It went well,” said the winner, “also because we have been experimenting and working with these machines with Simone Celli. In the various tests we realised that the type of coffee required a very low pressure and this was the decisive element in winning.”

La San Marco machines and grinders were used in all competitions, while the coffees were supplied respectively by Antica Tostatura Triestina for the speed competition and Lucaffè for the sensory competition.

The winner of the Master Coffee grinder championship final was Federico Cecconi. The event, devised by Fabio Verona, trainer of the Costadoro roasting company, with Grindie as main sponsor, saw six baristas challenging one another, who had to recreate the perfect cup of coffee but only being able to adjust the grinding of the coffee. All competitors had the same coffee blend supplied by Imperator, and identical machine settings. In addition to the many prizes provided by the sponsors, the winner will be able to compete with runner-up Andrea Faggiana for the first Italian title at the Milan coffee festival on 13 November.

Sustainability, energy costs and raw materials. The tenth edition of TriestEspresso Expo opened this morning with a conference entitled “From coffee to espresso between sustainability and rising energy and raw material costs”. The Expo, which will end on 29 October, is a biennial event organised by the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce through its in-house company Aries, with the joint organization and contribution of the Municipality of Trieste, the Convention and Visitor Bureau and in cooperation with the Associazione Caffè Trieste.

The Chairman of the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce, Antonio Paoletti, in his speech at the opening of the convention, moderated by Angela Hysi Vicentini, editor of the on-line daily newspapers Comunicaffé and Comunicaffe International, began by thanking the exhibitors, 160 from 13 countries, and visitors, from 42 countries around the world, “I know that you love Trieste and TriestEspresso Expo. It was not to be taken for granted that we would have such a strong result in this tenth edition after the lockdowns due to Covid. The sector was among the hardest hit because of the lockdowns, then came the war in Ukraine, the high price of raw materials and energy. After the pandemic, the war in Ukraine added further complications to the economic situation in Europe. Now for this event the new facility can accommodate 160 operators thanks to the expansion of the space with two marquees. It is a trade fair and those who come to TriestEspresso Expo do so to conduct business, to get to know and to be known. Over the next few days we will be tackling various topics, because for the Italian economy coffee is a sector with a significant economic and image value.”

The Mayor Roberto Dipiazza stressed “the great commitment of the institutions to support the city, businesses and citizens in facing this difficult period. However, Trieste is growing and it is right to grow and invest in sectors that are currently experiencing a positive trend, such as tourism and in particular the conference sector. TriestEspresso Expo is an important event in this context and presents Trieste’s excellence in coffee to operators from all over the world.”

Giorgio Rossi, municipal councillor for culture, sport and youth, highlighted the critical issues: “There is concern about this crisis but I am confident in this long wave. Trieste is emerging from stagnation and is growing with the weapons and strength to move forward thanks to the excellent synergy among the various bodies. TriestEspresso Expo is an outstanding event hosted at Tcc, but we are working on many fronts to continue to make the city grow.”

Fabio Scoccimarro, Councillor for Environmental Protection, Energy and Sustainable Development for the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, has no doubts and “coffee is a tradition that goes back a long way and Trieste has always been the coffee capital of the world, both in terms of culture with its historic cafés, but also in terms of trade. Circular economy and sustainable development are indispensable topics, we have numerous projects underway and we want to anticipate the green deal, as a region, to 2045 rather than 2050. To support businesses and families, the regional council led by the Chairman Massimiliano Fedriga has put more than EUR 150 million on the table, both in terms of contributions and investments. Today we need a European commitment to reduce the cost of energy.”

Fabrizio Polojaz, Chairman of Associazione Caffè Trieste, recalled that in recent years coffee quotations had remained essentially stable until the autumn of 2020, since which time they have started to increase dramatically, still placing both arabica and robusta among the highest levels of the last ten years. The reasons were varied, partly based on differences in expectations of supply and demand that arose with the pandemic crisis and its aftermath, although financial speculation played a good role. It is indispensable to read not only the data offered by the market, but also the news about coffee and the contexts in which it is found. What is needed is a stock market regulation that protects the economic operators in the chain by giving them priority over the financial ones.”

For Omar Zidarich, Chairman of Gruppo Italiano Torrefattori Caffè, “the price per cup will rise and we mere mortals will be forced to pay a higher cost due to heavy increases. Coffee roasters use ‘gasivorous’ systems, but the repercussions are felt throughout the supply chain: from the bean to the cup. Two years ago, the price of electricity was 125.6 euro per megawatt-hour, today it is 436.28 after a peak of over 540 euro.  Jute has risen by 70%, pallets by 300%, 500 kg containers for coffee roasters by 44%, ceramic cups, baked in ‘gasivorous’ ovens, have increased in price by 28%, packaging per kilo has risen from 0.07 cents to 0.56 cents, coffee machines – in addition to increases in raw materials and delivery delays – have a production cost of +150%. Our advice is to increase the price of the cup: we all have to be willing to pay a few cents more to keep up the quality of Italian espresso, recognised all over the world as a quality beverage, but in Rome with the price increase there has been a drop in sales of -28%, so we have a problem throughout the supply chain.”

According to Massimiliano Fabian, Chairman of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), “the circular economy is one of the cornerstones of the International Coffee Organization’s 2022-2023 programme, particularly in this year in which I will be Chairman. One of the pillars of the circular economy is sustainability, which has direct repercussions on respect for the environment. For the ICO, talking about the environment is crucial from the point of view of both producing and consuming countries.

Marcello Guaiana, Project Manager for Circular Economy at Area Science Park, presented a case of application to the coffee sector of a geo-referenced tool known as SISSI – Strumenti Informativi a Supporto della Simbiosi Industriale (Information Tools to Support Industrial Symbiosis), developed as part of the ARGO programme called “Green Technologies for the Ecological Transition”. “With SISSI, Area Science Park researchers intend to assess, together with the roasting companies, the feasibility of tangible industrial symbiosis operations by making use of production waste in the Trieste hinterland, with a method that can be replicated in other territorial contexts in the FVG region, going as far as the possibility of producing biogas.”

Andrea Giorgiutti, Director of the Production Quality Enhancement Service – Central Directorate for Agri-Food, Forestry and Fisheries Resources Fvg Region stated that “the sustainable and circular bio-economy includes all sectors that involve resources of a biological (renewable) nature, including also the related use, processing, distribution or consumption. On a national basis, the primary production (agriculture, forestry and fishing) and food sectors account for two-thirds of the value of the bio-economy (turnover and employment) and are closely linked to other important production sectors such as clothing, wood, paper and energy. The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, also by virtue of its distinctive features in innovation, has great potential in terms of the growth of its bio-economy, to the benefit of its objectives in terms of production, employment, resilience and sustainability in the meta-sector.”

In the afternoon, among the events held in the exhibition centre, the presentation dedicated to Brazilian products was of particular interest. 

Brazil is traditionally the world’s largest producer and exporter of coffee, a crop and culture that symbolises the excellence of the Brazilian agri-food sector. It is the product “made in Brazil” with the highest number of geographical indications (GIs) registered with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). This afternoon’s speakers included Marcos Matos, Executive Director of the Council of Coffee Exporters of Brazil (CECAFÉ), who presented “Coffee from Brazil: Quality, Sustainability and International Trade”, and Alessandra Almeida, Executive Director of the Santos Coffee Museum, with “Journey to the Land of Coffee”. Completing the Brazilian participation will be a space dedicated to the exhibition “Journey to the Land of Coffee”, from the Santos Coffee Museum, with a historical perspective of the Brazil-Italy relationship and an overview of the sustainability of Brazilian coffee production. The aim is to take the public on a journey between past and present, showing the passion for coffee shared by the two peoples.

As part of Coffee Today, the discussion focused on the role of women.

“Women in coffee: the female point of view as a driving force for the development of the sector” was the title of the round table organized as part of the Coffee Today events and which featured a number of prominent women engaged in different roles within the supply chain. Speakers included Giulia Camparsi from Fairtrade Italia, Theresa Sandalj from the Sandalj Trading Company, Francesca Oberti from BWT Italia and Arianna Mingardi from Amigos Caffè. The meeting was moderated by Paola Campana, founder of the Campana caffè brand and columnist for Coffee Today.The exhibitors come from Italy, Tanzania, Spain, Slovenia, Germany, Malta, Ethiopia, South Korea, Greece, Belgium, Switzerland, Turkey and Brazil, with a total of 160 stands distributed between the 8,000 square metres of the Tcc and the 2.6 thousand square metres created by means of marquees outside the Trieste Convention Center. Visitors from as many as 42 countries have already pre-registered for the event, demonstrating the great expectations aroused by TriestEspresso Expo and the new location that will host the world coffee economy over the three days in Trieste.

The international exhibition of Italian espresso is warming up its engines for an appointment full of novelties and contents. The tenth edition of TriestEspresso Expo, organised by the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Associazione Caffè Trieste, will take place from 27 to 29 October 2022 in the new Trieste Convention Centre (Tcc) in the Porto Vecchio of Trieste, the city’s old harbour. An area that evokes the long history and expertise of the city in the coffee industry, since when coffee really began to spread in “Old Europe” and landed right here at these docks. Numerous confirmations are arriving at the Chamber’s in-house company Aries, which is organising the event, and through the web channels www.triestespresso.it and related social media you will be able to find out who will be the protagonists, as well as take advantage of the opportunity to purchase tickets at reduced prices.
Also at this edition, there will be a rich programme of guided tastings of coffees from the roasting companies present at the fair, reviewed and awarded in the guide “Camaleonte la Guida dei caffè e delle torrefazioni d’Italia”, edited by Andrej Godina and Mauro Illiano. There will also be a presentation and screening of the documentary “Caffè & Vino – Due mondi”, followed by a round table discussion, at the end of which there will be the opportunity to taste both products. Instead, the seminar proposed and organised by Assocaffè Trieste, Gruppo Italiano Torrefattori Caffè in collaboration with Area Science Park will be dedicated to environmental sustainability. Trieste Coffee Expert will take centre stage with a discussion on the most topical issues affecting the entire world of the coffee chain: culture and counter-culture of Italian espresso, innovating and innovating oneself, digital coffee transition, the green revolution, and sustainability in the coffee sector.
Of course, there will also be competitions dedicated to baristas to highlight their skill and interaction with the espresso machine, such as the “Leva Contest”, a championship dedicated to baristas to highlight their skill and interaction with the lever-operated espresso machine. The event will be centred on two different types of competition: a speed competition that will be won by the pair of baristas who, in the space of an hour, will have managed to extract the greatest number of coffees using two lever-operated machines with 3 brewing groups each; another “Leva Contest Sensory” that will declare the winner as the barista who will have managed to brew the espresso that will obtain the best evaluation – in terms of flavour – by the pool of experts chosen for this purpose.
TriestEspresso Expo, thanks to the collaboration of Illycaffè’s Coffee University, will organise targeted training and educational events that have been set up specifically for the tenth edition of the event. The appointments, with free participation, will alternate over the three days of the fair, in the mornings and afternoons, and will be held by Coffee University lecturers and experts.

There will also be a training session for the Ho.re.ca. sector, during which the lecturer will confront an innovative hospitality professional for a reflection on how to face challenges and changes in today’s complex situations, and also daily mini training courses “The people of coffee: an album of photographs”, which will be developed through a guided tasting session to narrate the care and dedication of the people working in the coffee chain. Workshops dedicated to companies in the coffee chain are also scheduled to highlight how strategic the concept of sustainability is and how to apply it in the company. The aim of each company in the sector is to offer the best coffee, promoting lifestyles that respect people and the environment and at the same time build a better future, which is why a seminar on “La sostenibilità del caffè: un viaggio dalle origini” was planned.

It is not a lucky year worldwide for fair exhibitions dedicated to the coffee sector. From the United States (Sca event in New Orleans) to Germany (Internorga in Hamburg and Interpack in Düsseldorf), to England (London Coffee Festival), Singapore (FHA Horeca and FHA Food & Beverage), Corea (Coffee Expo Seoul), Cina (Hotelex in Shangai), Spain (Hostelco in Barcelona), Russia (Coffee Cacao Tea Russian Expo in Moscow), Australia (Mice in Melbourne) and Italy (Venditalia, Ipack-Ima in Milan), almost all dates have been cancelled due to the Covid 19 emergency. A climate of global uncertainty that Triestespresso Expo (Tee), planned to take place from October 22-24 in Trieste, was unfortunately forced to acknowledge.
The most important biennial fair dedicated to the entire espresso coffee supply chain must therefore be postponed to Aprl 2021. “A choice – states Antonio Paoletti, president of the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce – arising from the analysis of various indicators such as pre-registration numbers, the uncertainty regarding foreign visitors, and the reports from foreign collaborators monitoring the various markets Triestespresso Expo caters to, all aspects which, as a whole, put at risk the capacity of guaranteeing the customary high levels of quality the event is known for. At the time being, talks are taking place with the Associazione Caffè Trieste and enterprises to define the best dates for the much awaited return of first-rate exhibition events dedicated to the coffee sector in 2021.”
Triestepresso Expo, organized by Aries scarl – Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Giulia, in collaboration with the Associazione Caffè Trieste, will once again be set to take place in the Porto Vecchio of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s capital, inside the brand new and modern exhibition and convention centre: “Trieste Convention Center”, set among the suggestive warehouses of the Porto Vecchio of Trieste, the city’s ancient port of call. Tee is an event dedicated to a public of international professionals, featuring an area in which around 200 exhibitors share the floor, some of them representing the main brands in the sector.
TriestEspresso Expo is the most important professional biennial international fair dedicated to the entire espresso coffee supply chain and “Trieste Capitale del Caffè” is not only a registered trademark of the Chamber of Commerce, Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Municipality of Trieste, but also a tangible business chain going from raw coffee bean to a freshly brewed cup of espresso served in cafés worldwide.
